Shift of IT platformas is underpinned by mega trends

The advent of mobile phones has brought flexibility to work culture all over the globe and workforce now tends to use their own devices rather than a traditional desktop. The essence of mobility is being corroborated by other technology trends like Cloud and Big Data. Consumers are getting used to familiar platforms rather than an office desktop and this policy of BYOD (bring your own device) is giving an overhaul to the work culture. The attributes of BYOD like network accessibility and working through applications while being in touch with friends and family are no longer considered as privilege, but as pre-requisite facilitations to enhance the productivity of employees manifold.

With the consumerization of IT, consumers want network accessibility for personal use, and when one steps into the workplace, he/she expects a similar surrounding. IT sector hence is being seen as a service, but this puts enormous pressure on the CIOs as the IT is running on unlimited budget. Companies are trying to solve these problems by looking at IT as a service for the consumers and also source IT as a service from some backend supplier.

Cloud, Analytics and Mobility are the trends changing the face of IT enterprises. Cloud is being delivered by IT industry as a service providing unlimited scalability and availability. There is private cloud for internal IT, public cloud driven by third party and hybrid cloud which is a combination of both. The high growth rate of cloud is most beneficial for SMEs as it fulfills their business need.

Cloud for SMEs and Others
SMEs do not believe in investing in management of the entire network infrastructure and IT services. For companies going towards public cloud, the main concern is either an application demanding global accessibility or expression through any kind of device. In short, it is not the SMEs or large enterprises which define the way cloud adds value to businesses but the type of benefit or application. Cloud allows sales force to access application from any location through any medium and there is no requirement for separate integration or a new architecture whenever there is a new update or a new application is deployed.

The challenging factor is in dealing with the growth of data which is multiplying with each passing year. Problem arises since budget falls short and there is the need for data being evaluated on high performance. It is easy to serve a stipulated number of consumers with similar data but issues crop up when data is doubled and there is a need to serve consumers on the same level since it requires more investment. Challenge is to muster growth, speed and growing complexities either through bigger systems or using efficient technologies or asking consumers the level of expertise they want by automatic tearing services. This requires the consumers in adopting cloud and moving from one model to the next. This is facilitated by companies focusing on software defined enterprises and software defined storage.

Security and Innovation
Initially perimeter security was used in which perimeter lockdown was the approach to be followed to secure the network. But in recent times the threat has been internal. The threat is called Persistent Threats, which lies dormant monitoring valuable information looking for source to take the information out. Steps are taken to ensure safety by analysis of their behavior or blocking the information denying access to come in. Today companies tend to spend 30 percent on analysis and 70 percent on mitigation. In order to have a secure system, companies must be willing to use a real time analytical tool.

As per innovation it should be a well run program within the company facilitating conferences periodically as well as monitoring the number of papers filed for internal innovation and patents. The prime focus is to aid software defined companies to shift from platform 2 to platform 3 with various products. There is no doubt that the move from the second platform to the third platform of IT, underpinned by the mega trends of mobile, cloud, Big Data and social, is having a profound impact on business and transforming the way we work and live.
